Discography

Discography is a medical imaging procedure used to diagnose and evaluate spinal disc problems. It involves injecting a contrast dye into the spinal discs to visualize them on an X-ray or CT scan.

Purpose

The purpose of discography is to:

  • Determine if a spinal disc is the source of back pain
  • Evaluate the integrity of the spinal disc
  • Assess the degree of disc degeneration or damage
  • Help plan treatment, such as surgery or injections

Procedure

The discography procedure typically involves the following steps:

  1. The patient lies on their stomach or side on an X-ray table
  2. A local anesthetic is injected into the skin and muscle to numb the area
  3. A needle is inserted into the spinal disc under fluoroscopic guidance (live X-ray imaging)
  4. A contrast dye is injected into the disc, which may cause some pressure or discomfort
  5. X-rays or CT scans are taken to visualize the disc and the spread of the contrast dye
  6. The patient may be asked to rate their pain level during the procedure

Types of Discography

There are two main types of discography:

  • Disc stimulation: This involves injecting a contrast dye into the disc and then stimulating the disc with pressure or heat to provoke pain
  • Disc injection: This involves injecting a contrast dye into the disc without stimulation

Risks and Complications

As with any medical procedure, there are risks and complications associated with discography, including:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding or hematoma
  • Nerve damage or irritation
  • Allergic reaction to the contrast dye
  • Headache or nausea

Preparation and Aftercare

To prepare for discography, patients should:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for several hours before the procedure
  • Inform their doctor about any medications they are taking
  • Arrange for someone to drive them home after the procedure

After the procedure, patients should:

  • Rest and avoid strenuous activities for several hours
  • Apply ice or heat to the affected area to reduce discomfort
  • Follow their doctor's instructions for pain management and follow-up care
