Benign Adrenal Tumors

Types of Benign Adrenal Tumors

Most benign adrenal tumors do not cause any symptoms and are discovered incidentally during imaging tests. However, some people may experience:

• Abdominal pain or discomfort
• Weight gain or loss
• Changes in blood pressure
• Changes in hormone levels, such as an increase in cortisol or aldosterone

Diagnosis

Benign adrenal tumors are usually diagnosed using imaging tests, such as:

• Computed Tomography (CT) scan: This test uses X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed images of the adrenal glands.
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan: This test uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the adrenal glands.
• Ultrasound: This test uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the adrenal glands.

Treatment

Treatment for benign adrenal tumors usually involves:

• Monitoring: Small, non-functioning tumors may not require treatment and can be monitored with regular imaging tests.
• Surgery: Larger or functioning tumors may need to be removed surgically. This can usually be done using a minimally invasive procedure.
• Medication: In some cases, medication may be used to control hormone production or manage symptoms.

Prognosis

The prognosis for people with benign adrenal tumors is generally excellent. Most people can expect to make a full recovery and do not experience any long-term complications. However, it is essential to follow up with regular imaging tests to ensure the tumor does not grow or become cancerous.
